“Me Too” and “Times Up!”---What does this mean for Women of Color in STEM? (Moderated by Ted Childs and Rainia Washington)
Women’s voices are a force to be reckoned with. Politically, socially, culturally and economically they are speaking out about injustice, inequality, and sexual harassment. But speaking out about sexual harassment is a fairly recent occurrence. According to an EEOC study released in 2016, the numbers of women who have experienced sexual harassment in the workplace is staggering. Since few women actually report the harassment, the EEOC estimates between 25% and 85% of women have been sexually harassed. The study sheds light on why so few actually report it---those who did file complaint have been demoted, fired and further harassed. What does this mean for Women of Color working in STEM roles---roles that have historically been dominated by men? Women of Color have historically faced gender and racial barriers, often referred to as a ‘double whammy.’ Is sexual harassment yet another barrier to their survival / advancement in business?
The panel will explore the following:
- What exactly is sexual harassment?
- You’ve experienced sexual harassment. Now what? Finding your voice.
- You haven’t experienced sexual harassment but have observed others experiencing it. Finding your voice.
- Broadening the landscape of the workplace. Does it matter where the harassment comes from or where it occurs?
- What / who are the male allies that we need to address these issues? Does the existence of “Me Too” and “Times Up!” intimidate or threaten allies from being willing to engage in the career development of our WOC talent?
